| Fixing Unit | The fixing unit is a technical component of a laser or color laser printer or a photocopier. It serves to fix the toner applied to the paper by the developer unit or drum. |
| Construction | A fixing unit mainly consists of three different components: a heating element, surrounded by the fixing roller, as well as the pressure roller, which is usually made of silicone or similar material. This is pressed against the fixing roller by springs. |
| Functionality | The heating element that is energized with electricity heats the fixing roller to a temperature of about 180 °C and thus forms the basis for melting the toner. To do this, the paper located in the fixing unit is pressed by the pressure roller against the fixing roller, causing the toner to melt and thus form a solid bond with the paper. Both halogen lamps and ceramic elements are used as heating elements. Both types of heating have advantages and disadvantages. Halogen lamps are cheaper but have a limited lifespan. Ceramic elements heat up to operational temperature faster and have a longer lifespan, but are somewhat more expensive to purchase. |
